This program will cover the basics of backyard poultry nutritional needs from chicks to adults, with a focus on laying hens (the most popular backyard poultry). Common nutritional diseases will also be discussed. The second part of the presentation will concentrate on backyard eggs and public health. A holistic approach will be used when discussing how to improve egg safety via good husbandry and biosecurity, surveillance for Salmonella and the presence of lead in backyard eggs. Maurice Pitesky is an associate professor of cooperative extension at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, with an appointment in poultry health and food safety epidemiology. Dr. Pitesky earned his BS in biology from UCLA, and his DVM and MPVM from UC Davis. Dr. Pitesky is boarded in Preventative Veterinary Medicine (DACVPM).
